Paul Johnson's inaugural season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets produced a 9-4 record, more first-year wins than any other Georgia Tech coach, and a berth in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.
We caught up with the 2008 ACC Coach of the Year to learn more about Coach Johnson off the sidelines.
Tell us about a favorite charity that you support.
I support a number of charities including the Eagle Ranch Christian Children´s Home, the Dave Thomas Foundation, the American Cancer Association and participate in Coaches for a Cure as well as other events.
Do you require your football players to volunteer in the community? If yes, what are the requirements?
I do not require our players to participate, but I encourage them to do so. And our players have responded very well. The majority of the players have been active in projects throughout Atlanta.
What values and principles are your players learning through football?
Teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, establishing and striving for goals.
Do you believe margin of victory should be taken into account by pollsters and the BCS system?
No
If you could add any collegiate head coach to your staff, who would it be and why?
I think we already have the best set of assistant coaches in the nation. However, if we could add someone as a consultant of sorts, Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden certainly know a lot about the game.
Name one team that you have not faced that you would like to play in the future. Why?
I don´t feel strongly about this because our schedule is set for several years. However, it will be kind of nice to play Georgia Southern in a couple years because I once worked there, have great friends there, and we enjoyed a lot of success.
What TV shows would we find stored on your TiVo?
I don´t know how to TiVo.
Recall for us your all-time favorite college football game or individual play.
I´d probably say the 1999 I-AA national championship game between Georgia Southern and Youngstown State.
Fill in the blank. If I weren´t coaching football, I´d be ________.
A financial planner.
Where is your favorite place on the Georgia Tech campus?
Bobby Dodd Stadium on a Saturday afternoon (or a Thursday night).
What sports did you play in high school? What was your best?
Football, basketball, baseball and golf. I was probably best at golf.
