About This Coach

In eight years, Coach Matthews has led JMU's football program through one of its more-successful periods. His 2004 team won the NCAA title, and the 1999 and 2006 Dukes reached the playoffs. Matthews, from Andrews, Texas, earned an undergraduate degree in education from West Texas State in 1976. He’s done graduate work at Texas Christian. And he’s worked as a college football coach for the last 29 years including stints at Georgia, Marshall and Texas Christian.
